OpenCD Project Minimize
The OpenCD project aims to introduce users of MS-Windows to the benefits of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). We include only the highest quality programs, which have been carefully tested for stability and which we consider appropriate for a broad audience. We provide a description and screen-shots of each program, so you can get an idea of what it does before installing. All these applications install and un-install cleanly, so you can be comfortable testing them with the knowledge that they will not adversely affect your system. The programs on the disc are all distributed under an Open Source License (OSI approved), which allows you to freely use and distribute them. You may even change the programs using the source code, which we make available, and distribute your own modified versions, provided you then in turn make the source code available, and give appropriate credit to past contributors.

You can get to the site by clicking here -> The Open CD.

The software current on the CD is as follows:

    • Cooperative Linux Minimize
... "If Linux runs on every architecture, why should another operating system be in its way? " ...

Cooperative Linux is the first working free and open source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows natively. More generally, Cooperative Linux (short-named coLinux) is a port of the Linux kernel that allows it to run cooperatively alongside another operating system on a single machine. For instance, it allows one to freely run Linux on Windows 2000/XP, without using a commercial PC virtualization software such as VMware, in a way which is much more optimal than using any general purpose PC virtualization software. In its current condition, it allows us to run the KNOPPIX Japanese Edition on Windows.

      TopologiLinux Minimize
Topologilinux is a free Linux distribution to be run on top or inside your existing windows system. The main thing with Topologilinux is that it does not require any partitioning at all. (uses a single file as linux root system) Topologilinux is therefore very easy to install.

      DAG RPM Repository Minimize

I am responsible for setting up a large number of specialised boxes. By this I mean mail servers, network management servers, etc. I find that keeping these machines up to date can be a daunting task. This is further compounded when the organisation does not have any Linux skills. To help wit this problem I tend to set up APT-GET or YUM to track Dag Wieers RPM repository. Most of the staff have been educated to install packages from the repsoitory using SYNAPTIC or similar tool. As a result updates are handled more or less automatically.

The repsoitory can be found at http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/

It should be noted that this does NOT result in a set and forget server as some updates change the configuration files, this results in manual intervention. YOU DID MAKE A BACKUP DIDN'T YOU :)

      TUCOFS Minimize

A repository that has always impressed me can be found at http://www.cybersnitch.net/tucofs/tucofs.asp?mode=mainmenu

This list of software can be used to carry out forensic audits of PC's. The software is organised by platform and function. It will not make you an auditor, but, it will certainly make any auditor's job easier, wheither you are investigating a hack or a white collar crime.
